Lunch at Hermosa Beach Fish Shop

One of the many things I wanted to do during my summer break was to drive to the South Bay and hang-out with my hubby at one of the many beach towns we tend to ignore the rest of the year. So on a recent Sunday morning we drove to Hermosa Beach, AKA "The Best Little Beach City," located just south of us.

True to its tagline, Hermosa Beach is really one of the cutest beach towns in Southern California and only a short 30-minute drive from the Westside (with moderate traffic).

But because of the cuteness element of it, it's hard to find parking...so after a quick cruise down the main drag, hubby and I drove east a few blocks and found our lunch spot: Hermosa Beach Fish Shop (HBFS).

Unlike the restaurants in the Hermosa Beach main drag that seem to appeal to a tourist crowd - IF you find parking - Hermosa Beach Fish Shop has ample parking because it's located in the same shopping center as a grocery store and coffee house.

THIS in itself, was a huge deal for us, so of course we said yes to the restaurants invitation to stop by for lunch.

The restaurant is a casual locals hangout with both indoor and dog-friendly outdoor seating, that has a walk-up-to-order and seat yourself-fast-casual-theme that has become commonplace in the So Cal restaurant scene.

The menu is extensive yet heavily focused on its namesake: fresh Seafood delivered daily. But the best part about it? Fish, shrimp, scallops, or lobster, can be prepared any way you like, and seasoned with any one or any two (or three!) marinades or rubs of your choosing, and either grilled or pan fried.

But it gets better!

The seafood can either be prepared and served in tacos, over a salad or as a plate. Everything, and I mean, everything including the tacos, are large servings and can be shared.

You can complement your dishes with their house green salsa (OMG - SO good!), red salsa, and some dishes are served with a tropical mango salsa.

The sides, from the rice, to the steamed vegetables, are prepared and seasoned perfectly; while the seaweed side salad was a refreshing and tangy.

We tried the clam chowder, which was a light yet creamy chowder that was the perfect start to our meal.  We then had the blackened-shrimp appetizer that was served with their spicy aioli - it was a perfect "blackened" rub that was so good, we're still talking about it.

For our main course, hubby had a grilled sea bass prepared with "garlic butter," while I ordered the pan-fried scallops seasoned with a chipotle glaze. The scallops were very good, but the sea bass was outstanding. An absolute must try!

As for drinks, while my hubby and I didn't drink adult drinks this time around, we were pleasantly surprised at the Hermosa Beach Fish Shop's selection of local beer on tap and finding out that the restaurant doesn't have a corkage fee!

While we don't live a short driving distance to the Hermosa Beach Fish Shop, we will definitely come back and spend a weekend afternoon with Princess Maya.

I also invite you to check-out Hermosa Beach Fish Shop on Faceook to stay updated on their specials and events: https://www.facebook.com/HBFishShop

A New Old Dining Experience at McCormick & Schmick's

When I worked in Pasadena many moons ago, one of my favorite activities was enjoying Happy Hour at McCormick & Schmick's. The food was always excellent and the drinks were made with perfect attention to detail. (M&S has one of the best, if not THE BEST, Martini.)

The problem is...I no longer work in Pasadena and rarely do we head that far east.

Fortunately for me/us, I recently met the amazing management team from the El Segundo/Manhattan Beach location, that was lovely enough to invite to dine at this location for one of our date nights.
The large menu at McCormick & Schmick's El Segundo/Manhattan Beach
The menu at El Segundo/Manhattan Beach's McCormick & Schmick's is focused on their fresh approach to dining, while the executive chef showcases a vast selection of only the freshest quality seafood varieties, some of which were from local waters near their restaurant; as well as unique species from international waters.

The Executive Chef also creates seasonally inspired dishes and regionally inspired menu items that are unique to this location. So while I was still able to order the Maine lobster bisque at the El Segundo location, there was an item or two that were on this locations menu that isn't on the Pasadena-location menu.
In terms of the location itself, the El Segundo/Manhattan Beach location is a lot closer to my Westside home, and close to both the 105 and 405.  This location is also directly across the street from a movie theater, making it the perfect restaurant for a date night or special night out.
Shrimp Kisses appetizer, bacon-wrapped pepper-jack filled shrimp
This location is quite large and had a beautiful outdoor courtyard area, several private rooms and a stunning bar - making it the perfect location for special occasions or other celebrations. But since it's close to the LAX and other hotels, it's also ideal for meetings and small work gatherings.
Lobster Bisque
Clam Chowder
My hubby and I both enjoyed an a shrimp appetizer that was called "Shrimp kisses" to start, followed by Maine lobster bisque for me, and New England clam chowder for my hubby.

Although my hubby is a HUGE pasta fan, I was surprised to see him order a simple grilled fish dish, while I picked a more flavorful parmesan crusted sole with orzo.  Both were great, cooked perfectly, and exactly the right size to fill us without taking us over the edge.
Grilled Mahi Mahi served with seasonal vegetables and mashed potatoes
Although the dining room buzzed with plenty of folks, private parties, and the usual busyness of a Saturday night, our waiter didn't skip a beat.

Everything, we experienced, from the location, to our private dining area for two, the drinks, to the food, and ultimately the service, was extremely well done.

As if our evening couldn't be any better, we ended our meal with a seasonal strawberry dessert that highlighted the yummy strawberries that were in season.

With dozens of menu items available at all McCormick and Schmick's locations – including fresh seafood, aged steaks, poultry, entrée salads, pastas and more -- we found that this was the perfect restaurant to bring everyone in the family, including our picky eaters, for a special night out, happy hour, or even to plan a special celebration.

Discover the Ocean-to-Fork Trend

Top Chef Janine Falvo, Executive Chef at SIP Lounge
One foodie trend that is fitting of my Southern California life, is the ocean-to-fork movement that Janine Falvo, executive chef at SIP Lounge is spearheading, in where else? But Long Beach.
Largely ignored as being Los Angeles less attractive sister, Long Beach is really a hidden gem an hour south of LAX. Maybe because of this, Long Beach never feels like it reaches LA status with its food, entertainment, or shopping. But things are turning around, and Long Beach is stepping-up to the plate (pun intended), and dishing out some pretty incredible things-to-do, places to dine at, and shopping. But one thing that has lacked is an upscale lounge close to the City Center, until SIP came around.
Touted as Long Beach’s newest hotspot: SIP, is a modern lounge that celebrates the local flavor in both its food and drinks modernizing the laid back vibe Long Beach is known for.  While the lounge decor elevates the Renaissance Long Beach Hotel, which is going through major renovations.
Sitting in the ultra-plush booth felt relaxing; the lighting perfectly complimenting the modern, intimate atmosphere. Other guests nibbled on yummy eats while sitting in the beautifully appointed chaise lounges, leather couches and plush chairs. Although I didn't venture outside, guests mentioned the beauty of SIPs outdoor patio, which has daybed style seating, a fire pit and radiant heated floor.
With the Pacific Ocean and its countless fresh fish options just a few blocks away, SIPs menu has been revamped with a major focus on seafood. In addition to fresh caught seafood, Chef Falvo’s kitchen also features the finest organic meats, artisanal cheeses and local produce.

SIPs also offers hand-crafted cocktails from the finest spirits, fine wines by the glass, craft beers and other bold flavorful food options that "evoke energy and connectivity," according to their restaurants website.
Together with other bloggers, including Michael, I was able to sample this new menu, which I would describe anywhere from inventive to surprising.

From a poached quail appetizer, to a simple shrimp bruschetta, Chef Janine Falvo didn't skimp on flavors while presenting beautifully plated appetizers that complimented our drinks beautifully.

All-in-all, SIP Lounge made the trip from Los Angeles well worth it, and  gave me a reason to spend a beautiful evening, possibly even a future weekend, in Long Beach.

Touring San Francisco's Chinatown & Union Square

The Iconic Golden Gate Bridge
I recently had the opportunity to spend an afternoon in San Francisco's Chinatown and Union Square.  Although it was a quick visit, I made a list of of my favorite places that I highly recommend you also take the time to visit when in San Francisco:

China Town
OP Therapy Academy
811 Clay Street
(Crosses with Grant Street in China Town)
San Francisco, CA 94108
(415) 989-8822

Open 7 Days a Week
10 a.m. - 10 p.m.

$35 for one-hour Foot & Body Massage

Foot reflexology is part of the 5000 years history of healing in art and culture.  It works by releasing stress and enhancing relaxation.  It cleans the cells, eliminates accumulated toxins which are the root cause of those knots, and restores the free flow of energy (QI) along the meridian.  This is the perfect stop after walking through all those steep streets after shopping in San Francisco!

Eastern Bakery
720 Grant Avenue
San Francisco, CA 94109
(415) 982-5157

Open 7 Days a Week

Prices vary from 50 cents (yes!) to $110 for a full-sheet of mixed-fruit cake (feeds 40-80)

They are known as the oldest Chinese bakery in San Francisco's Chinatown, and pride themselves in baking everything from scratch without preservatives.  Eastern Bakery also has a small selection of pre-made dim-sum (AKA has probably been in the case for quite some time).  The owner and her mother where my tour-guides, and although beans in a moon-cake sounded like something most locals would want, I opted for something straight out of the oven: coconut filled bread!  A fresh and doughy snack with a 'slight' sweet coconut filling.  It was the perfect afternoon snack!

San Francisco, CA 94108
(415) 788-3828

This is one of a mini-chain of five Chinese-owned (and themed) stores, but only two of the five are my favorites and must-go-to stops in your tour of China Town. This one in particular had a few items (some of which you can see on Instagram), that you can take back home or give as souvenirs, without embarrassment!

Merchant of China

San Francisco, CA 94108

If I see a big "SALE" sign, you can bet your morning Java that I will wander in.  I was happy to find in this boutique a small, but well made, non-cheesey collection of toddler-sized Asian-themed outfits.  I couldn't resist, and I got a mandarin-collared dress for my four-year-old niece.

Kan's Restaurant
708 Grant Avenue
San Francisco, CA 94108
(415) 362-5267

Open 7 Days a Week
HOURS

After a few minutes walking through China Town, the smells get to you and suddenly you are hungry.  With all fault of my own, the eager and happy lady outside this restaurant reeled me in with the promise of $2.95 Dim Sum and a private view of China Town.

Unfortunately, the only reason to visit this restaurant is the view.  Prepare to be disappointed otherwise.

New Peking
747 Grant Street
San Francisco, CA 94108
(415) 788-2388

I can not say enough about this boutique - I LOVE it, and love the super helpful staff.  The selection of products goes beyond your typical chatsky Chinatown fare!  Not only did I find a super-cute pair of dragon slippers for my nephew, I also found a purse-sized "treasure box," that I started using immediately!

Union Square
Lefty O'Douls
333 Geary Street
(Union Square Area)
San Francisco, CA 8900
(415) 982-8900

Open 7 Days a Week
7 a.m. - 2 a.m.

As snobbish as I tend to be, there's always something comforting when I wander into this down-home locals fav: Cafeteria-style, pick your dinner (or lunch) as you go, pay at the counter, choose your table or eat at the bar. Simple.

Personally, I prefer to eat at the bar and let the bartender make "adult-drink" recommendations while I listen to the band of the evening.  It never fails: I always meet some pretty cool people!

p.s. If you do stop on by, please say HI to Paul and Bethany and try their Cinnamon Shot!

Macy's
170 O'Farrell Street
(Union Square)
San Francisco, CA 94102
(415) 397-3333

Open 7 Days a Week
10 a.m. - 9 p.m.

This is the "mothership" worthy of any and all visits to San Francisco before you go anywhere else to shop.  A special shout-out to Jeremy in the Inglot (Beauty/Make-up) department for his amazing make-up tips!  (Disclaimer: Macy's is my client, but I am a long-time fan!)

Although I only spent an afternoon in Chinatown and Union Square, I had a great time and look forward to my next visit.  (View photos from my visit to San Francisco's Chinatown here.)

Happy travels!

Recipe: Flavorful Turkey Spaghetti

While my husband is Italian-Hungarian, but very Italian-American when it comes to his eating habits; I am Mexican-American and less enamored with pasta, albeit a bit more adventuresome with my menu choices

To change things up a bit and still please my carb-loving husband, I've created my own creative turkey pasta dish that also indulges my sense of adventure.

It's a light and easy to prepare dish, with a "kick" to it.

I don't chop the ingredients super fine as they tend to shrink when cooking.
Plus, I like to see the "color" of the veggies pop in my dish.
Ingredients*:
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 lb. ground turkey
  • 1 14.5 ounce can of diced and no salt added tomatoes (you may also use "fire roasted" tomatoes for an earthier flavor)
  • 1 tsp dry Thyme
  • Salt to taste
  • 1/2 cup chopped white onion
  • 1 small chopped yellow bell pepper
  • 1 small chopped orange bell pepper
  • 1 small chopped red bell pepper
  • 1 chopped jalapeno pepper
  • 2 large chopped cloves of garlic
  • Pinch of sugar
*I prefer to use all organic ingredients

Preparation:

Heat oil in pan, and slightly cook both onion and garlic until onion is almost transparent, then add the turkey, peppers, and spices.

Notice that the turkey is cooked but definitely not brown, which makes it too dry.
Slowly cook all ingredients over a medium-low heat* until the turkey is cooked, but not brown; then add stewed tomatoes.

*I only use All-Clad pots and pans, which needs a lower heat than other conventional cookware.

This particular time I used the diced/no salt added tomatoes
instead of the fire roasted can.
Add the pinch of sugar (to take-away the acidic flavor of the tomatoes) and lower the heat.  Cook for approximately 30 minutes.

The sauce will be done when the diced tomatoes are "broken" down, yet perfectly melded with the other ingredients.  Peppers will be soft, but not overcooked.

Notice how the tomatoes are starting to break down?
Add the sauce over cooked spaghetti pasta, and mix slowly in a large pasta dish.

Garnish with freshly shaved romano cheese.

Tomato Turkey Sauce over Spaghetti Pasta
Notice the different colors popping up - Delish!

Buon appetito!
