BTHVN Tour Commemorates Beethoven's 250th Birthday

Recently, I was invited by DHL to preview the first U.S. stop on the global BTHVN exhibit tour celebrating the life, work, musical and cultural legacy of Ludwig von Beethoven.

The BTHVN traveling pop-up exhibit is a partnership between Beethoven-Haus Bonn and DHL to commemorate Beethoven's 250th birthday. While eight US and international stops are scheduled for the tour, the uniquely Los Angeles stop included concertos featuring Gustavo Dudamel, Lang Lang and the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Walt Disney Concert Hall.
Whether in Los Angeles or New York, prior to each weekend concert, the weeklong BTHVN pop-up exhibit will feature interactive activities highlighting music, media and historical artifacts including a real violin owned by Beethoven – as well as replica pianos on loan from Beethoven-Haus Bonn.

Many of the featured original objects will be shown internationally for the first time including an ear trumpet used by the composer and an original print from Andy Warhol’s Beethoven series from 1987.

Both my husband and I were fortunate to view items unique to Los Angeles, including Beethoven’s viola and original scores that where reflected in the LA Phil programming.

While the Los Angeles BTHVN pop-up tour and Beethoven programming has ended, future US stops will also offer pre-concert lectures for ticket holders highlighting each stops unique elements.Visit the official BTHVN WEBSITE to learn more about the BTHVN pop-up exhibit tour and its schedule.

Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel: The Exhibition

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange debuts Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel: The Exhibition, in The Cathedral Cultural Center on the Christ Cathedral Campus. The limited time exhibit is an immersive experience of museum quality and near-life size reproduction of the iconic master’s frescos that adorn the Sistine Chapel in Rome, recreating the awe and wonder of arguably one of mankind’s greatest artistic achievements.

While the introduction and information in the pre-show area of the exhibition will prepare visitors for a new staging of Michelangelo’s works and awaken their curiosity, the overwhelming impression for the observer will be the dimensions of the art, the closeness to the picture, and the modern style of the exhibition. As a result, the visitor can explore the artwork up close at a distance impossible to achieve in the Sistine Chapel.
Visitors who have never seen the originals promises to intrigue and inspire art lovers to visit the Sistine Chapel, while those who have already visited the Sistine Chapel will find a new way of appreciating one of the greatest works of art.

The exhibit is open to the public from April 13, 2019 through January 11, 2020, and can be seen seven days a week. Refer to the website for black-out dates and ticket prices.

Art + Femenism Hosts Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon Events in an Effort to Close the Gender Gap Online

Studies show that fewer than 16% of Wikipedia contributors identify as female and 75% are under the age of 30. Because of this, Wikipedia’s content is skewed by the lack of representation by women and important stories remain untold.

To combat the lack of female representation, Art+Feminism is hosting Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon events at various Southern California museums and art institutions every weekend in March.
I invite you to be a part of the change and help lessen this disparity so that more cis and transgender women and their accomplishments are represented on the world's go-to source for information by joining us at one of the following Edit-a-Thon events:

Saturday, March 9: Vincent Price Art Museum at East Los Angeles College hosts an edit-a-thon focused on Latinx Women+Non-Binary Artists. A Wikipedia training session for beginners will take place at Noon.
Address/Time: 1301 Avenida Cesar Chavez (Monterey Park), Noon–4pm.

Sunday, March 10: Hammer Museum hosts an edit-a-thon focused on Women+Film+Media. Wikipedia training sessions for beginners will take place at Noon and 3pm, and a free photo booth invites women artists and filmmakers to stop by and have their portraits taken for Wikimedia Commons.
Address/Time: 10899 Wilshire Boulevard (Westwood), Noon–5pm.

Sunday, March 17: LACMA hosts an edit-a-thon focused on Women+Design+Craft. Wikipedia training sessions for beginners will be held at Noon and 3pm. At 2pm, LACMA Associate Curator Staci Steinberger will lead a free tour of West of Modernism: California Graphic Design, 1975–1995, focusing on key women represented in the exhibition.
Address/Time: 5905 Wilshire Boulevard (Miracle Mile), Noon–5pm.

Note: LACMA offers free supervised activities for children (ages 3-1/2–12) through the Andell Family Sundays program. To participate in these activities, follow the directions on the RSVP form.

Thursday, March 21: MCA San Diego hosts an edit-a-thon focused on women artists in MCASD’s permanent collection as part of their monthly after-hours event, “Downtown at Sundown.”
Address/Time: 1100 Kettner Boulevard (San Diego), 5–8pm.

Sunday, March 31: California African American Museum edit-a-thon focused on women artists in CAAM’s permanent collection and those who have exhibited at the museum over the years. A Wikipedia training session for beginners will be held at 1pm.
Address/Time: 600 State Drive (Exposition Park), 1–4pm.
RSVP to attend any of the Edit-a-Thon's and make sure to bring your laptop or tablet to create and improve Wikipedia pages with a bit of research and writing while collaborating with other women to combat gender bias on Wikipedia.

"ROMA" Community Screenings

Following Roma’s 10 Oscar nominations and two Golden Globe® wins, the National Domestic Workers Alliance (NDWA) and Participant Media have announced a nationwide effort of community screenings for domestic workers and employers in 12 cities, including Atlanta, Los Angeles, Chicago, Seattle, and New York.

These screenings are part of a larger campaign to encourage viewers take action and explore how they can make a difference for the women who care for our families and homes.
Roma comes at a time  of incredible momentum in the fight towards equality and the improvement of working conditions for domestic workers. To date, eight states and one city have passed laws to expand rights for domestic workers. This year alone, Senator Kamala Harris and Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal will be introducing the first national Domestic Workers Bill of Rights.

While these screenings have been filled with members of partner organizations, you can also help domestic workers at a personal level by contributing to the first ever benefits platform for housecleaners called Alia.

Alia allows for employers and supporters of housecleaners to provide paid time off with as little as $5 (monthly contribution). While house cleaners in California and New York can also access accident insurance, critical illness insurance, life insurance, or disability insurance.

To find out how to support domestic workers, visit: www.roma.domesticworkers.org

San Diego Museum Month

When most of us think about San Diego, we picture glorious blue beaches, perfect weather, family friendly activities, and tacos for every palate.

While all of the above is true, very few people realize that San Diego is also the home to more than forty cultural institutions and museums. Or, as I like to say, a museum discovery can be had every day of the week when in San Diego.
That's exactly why Hilton partnered with the San Diego Museum Council to create a "Museum Package" that offers half-priced admission to more than 40+ museums and special hotel pricing during the entire month of February.
For those of us living in So Cal, #SDMuseumMonth gives us the opportunity to recharge our batteries and fill our soul with art with just a short drive from home. While those traveling from all corners of the world can get a glimpse to what San Diego art curators and historians are discovering both locally and abroad.
Whether you're planning a weekend getaway or a week vacation, there is no better time than February  to visit San Diego this year. Here's a few tips to help you plan your #SDMuseumMonth visit:

#SDMuseumMonth Essential Travel Tips:

Where to stay:
2137 Pacific Hwy Suite B, San Diego, CA 92101

Where to eat:
Breakfast:
The Bayside Kitchen and Bar is conveniently located at the Hilton Garden Inn and offers a breakfast buffet - that includes fresh made waffles, pancakes or French Toast. While all are TO-DIE-FOR,  order the French toast. Trust me!

Lunch:
San Diego has great Tacos, but Lucha Libre Taco Shop is more than food. It's also a fun place to hang-out and munch on unexpected combos, like the surf and turf tacos!

Happy Hour:
Balboa Park, the West Coast response to Grand Central Park, has several museums and eateries, but Panama 66 is my favorite. While you can order most of your drink faves, you can also twist-it up a bit and get cider on tap, y'all!

Dinner:
Drive, walk or trolly to Old Town San Diego, and sample hand-made tortillas before you make your dinner selection any one of the colorful Mexican and Cal-Mexican restaurants on the "strip." Order the "Frida Margarita" if you decide on Cafe Coyote.

Get your pass:
Receive your Museum Month pass when you check-in at participating Hilton hotels

Plan your museum stops:
Visit the San Diego Museum Council website for the latest information about Museum Month and upcoming exhibitions. Some of my favorite San Diego museums include:

Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego

Museum of Man

Museum of Photographic Arts

The Neon Museum recently announced its call for entries for its 2019 National Artist Residency.

Now in its fourth year, the Neon Museum National Residency offers a U.S.-based contemporary artist or group of artists the opportunity to explore and interpret the Neon Museum’s historic collection within a broader cultural context nationwide.

During the winning candidate’s tenure in Las Vegas, the local community will have multiple opportunities to engage with the artist and their work.
The successful entrant will be selected based on demonstrated artistic excellence, quality and clarity of the proposal, quality and benefit of the proposed public program and demonstrated ability to complete the project within the allotted schedule. Upon completion of the residency, the museum requests the artist contribute a mutually agreed-upon artwork to the museum’s collection.

The residency spans eight weeks, with some flexibility between June 1 and Aug. 31, 2019. For the successful candidate, the Neon Museum will provide:

  • $3,000 stipend plus a modest budget for materials, if required.
  • $800 travel allowance.
  • Living accommodations for eight weeks in downtown Las Vegas.

  • Access to the museum’s sign collection and archives, marketing and publicity support, photographic documentation and staffing to assisting with administering the public portion of the program.
Eligible artists must live in the United States and work in the field of visual arts (including two- and three-dimensional work as well as digital and video art), performance or sound and be over the age of 18. Applications are due Friday, Feb. 1, 2019, by 5 p.m. Pacific Standard Time.

Darren Aronofsky's #WhyDoYouVote PSA Urges Gen Z Audiences to Get Out and Vote

In the Sierra Club #WhyDoYouVote? PSA produced by Darren Aronofsky's Protozoa Pictures and Chromista, Aronofsky asked 15 Gen Z activists, active in movements for indigenous rights, gun control, rights for the disabled, immigrant rights, climate justice, and transgender equality, among others:

“Why are you voting in 2018?”

The activists interviewed, who were under 18 at the time of the 2016 election, passionately advocated for participation in this November’s election by giving answers related to current hot-topic issues including racial equality, gun control, immigration, the environment and more, in the hopes to drive Generation Z to vote this November.

Blue Boy Conservation Exhibition

The exhibition “Project Blue Boy” will open at The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens on Sept. 22, 2018, offering visitors a glimpse into the technical processes of a senior conservator working on the famous painting as well as background on its history, mysteries, and artistic virtues.

For the first three to four months during the year-long exhibition, The Blue Boy will be on public view in a special satellite conservation studio set up in the west end of the Thornton Portrait Gallery, where Christina O’Connell, senior paintings conservator working on the painting and co-curator of the exhibition, will work on the painting to continue examination and analysis, as well as begin paint stabilization, surface cleaning, and removal of non-original varnish and overpaint.

It then will go off view for another three to four months while she performs structural work on the canvas and applies varnish with equipment that can’t be moved to the gallery space. Once structural work is complete, The Blue Boy will return to the gallery where visitors can witness the inpainting process until the close of the exhibition.

During the two periods when the painting is in the gallery, O’Connell will work in public view on regularly scheduled days and times. For the first in-gallery period, from Sept. 22 through January 2019 (estimated), visitors can watch the process each Thursday and Friday from 10 a.m. to noon and from 2 to 4 p.m., and on the first Sunday of each month from 2 to 4 p.m.

“Project Blue Boy” will be accompanied by an array of public programs, including scholarly lectures, curator tours, and family activities. Also, specially trained docents will be stationed in the gallery throughout the run of the exhibition to illuminate the project and answer questions.
The Huntington
1151 Oxford Rd.
